DRC Consulting nsj
News

Welcome to the first nsj update of 2005. We start the year with a three new items to help you keep even more unwanted mail out of your environment:

Sender Authentication using SPF
nsj now provides support for the SPF sender authentication scheme (read the RFC here). SPF is a way to confirm that message sent from a user in domain @abc.com was sent from a server that has been designated a valid mail sending server for that domain. SPF helps to stop spam, phishing and other malicious mail sent with forged 'from' addresses. SPF is one of several proposed standards for sender authentication but has already been adopted by many companies because it is relatively easy to implement. SPF is easy to enable, see the following help document for details - SPF.

We recommend the following settings in your nsj.ini file to use SPF:

filter=spf,score=40;IfResultIs=fail
filter=spf1,score=-20;IfResultIs=pass
filter=spf2,score=10;IfResultIs=softfail

Download the latest nsj jar file to use SPF.

Aside from using nsj and SPF to filter mail from other domains, DRCC can assist you to implement SPF for your own mail domain so that recipients of your mail can use SPF to validate it.

Domain Keys
DRCC is working with Yahoo! and other industry leaders to bring nsj a Domain Keys filter in the not too distant future. Domain Keys is another sender authentication proposal which can also detect electronic tampering. Domain Keys and SPF work nicely together to provide an excellent stamp of authenticity on mail messages.

Domino Scanner
For users of Lotus Domino (r4,5,6 or 7) who do not have control of their SMTP inbound servers we introduce a new scanner which can provide almost all of nsj's advanced scanning functions for NRPC routed messages. The Domino Scanner watches a mail router mailbox on your server, scan any mail that shows up in it and pass it on to the user after scanning. If your Domino SMTP services are provided by a distant office and don't provide any effective spam control, Domino Scanner might be the answer to your Spam problems. Try it for free - contact DRCC for details.

New console command: Status
A new command for the locale and remote nsj console will identify the tasks that are running. A sample output is shown below

SMTP Proxy > Running
Domino scanner > Runnning
Local Console > Running
POP Proxy > Runnning

We'll bring you news whenever there are new features or developments with nsj. You can also catch the latest new from DRCC and other sources using the nsj web interface - check the 'News' panel.
